One of the most important processes after any new planting is watering. Watering should be completed throughout the first two seasons to ensure success of the planting.

when to water A good rule of thumb:

Water in the morning before sunrise during the hot summer months. During cool autumn weather, water after sunrise a few hours before dusk to prevent mold from setting in. We recommend picking up a soil moisture meter for trees/shrubs/perennials/annuals. A moisture meter will allow you to check if you are getting enough water to the soil around your plant. Sometimes your sprinkler may not put out enough water due to your home's water pressure. This will help you understand if more time or more frequent watering is in order.

how to water general guidelines...

...for newly planted grass seed watering water daily for the first 14 days for 30 minutes. After the first 14 days, increase watering to 1 hour daily. After the grass reaches 4 inches tall, let the grass dry out for 24 hours. Then mow the grass with a mower on 3 ½ inches mow height with a bagger. Resume daily watering for the next 14 days for 1 hour.

After the grass reaches 4 inches, let the grass dry out again for 24 hours. Then mow the grass with the mower set on 3 ½ inches mow height with a bagger. Resume watering to a minimum of once a week for an hour for the remainder of the growing season. The growing season typically ends mid to late November. Remember to stay off the lawn for the first 6 weeks other than to move sprinklers if needed or to mow.

...for newly planted sod watering water daily for the first 14 days for 1 hour. If any areas of the sod are dry to the touch or browning, double the watering time as you need more water or water isn't getting to that area.

...for newly planted trees and shrubs water once a week with a garden hose placed at the base of the plant with a slow trickle for 30 minutes or less. If using a soaker hose, double the time. A soil moisture meter is a good idea for trees and shrubs, less guessing. In the cool autumn weather, biweekly should be sufficient.

...for newly planted perennials water 2-3 times a week during the summer months. Once the cool fall weather kicks in, once a week should do the trick. Typically, plants do well when they are watered correctly. Insufficient or excessive watering will kill your plants. When in doubt, pull the soil moisture meter out.
